Define STB

Device that converts and displays data from analog cable, digital cable, or digital broadcast television to a standard frequency (channel number) for display on a standard analog television set, or a box that receives off-air DTV signal for display on a DTV monitor.

STB call Set-top box, it is responsible for receiving, converting and sending the picture and sound of the broadcast to the associated television. If your HDTV-ready TV has no built-in HDTV tuner you must connect it to a compatible HDTV STB first. Until then it will not receive and display digital television programs. This decoder for digital TV. The set-top box is a digital receiver that converts the digital stream of MPEG data into analogue images and sounds. The receiver consists of three main component groups: Receiving module with tuner, QPSK demodulator and FEC correction CA system. Here a smart card is used to determine whether the set-top box may decode encrypted data, and transmit this on to the customer.

Also some person call it as satellite TV broadcasting. It used to receive and decode the DTV signal and deliver it to a monitor. The STB may also be capable of capturing and decoding enhanced television transmissions. Other types of STBs are used to convert and decode data for analog cable, digital cable and small dish satellite. Some, but not all of these STBs are also capable of decoding DTV.

How many you know about DM 500?

Last week I went to my aunt's home , I saw all the people of their family are sitting around the television, smile loudly and a lot of hapiness on their face! I feld very curious! Woo, they bought a digital satellite receiver to watch free open channel! It can see a lot of free channel of abroad country! So when I went to home to search some information on the internet, Had a better understand of digiter satellite reciver:The DM500si is the successor to the DM5620 and is the smallest and cheapest Dreambox. It is based around an IBM STBx25xx Digital Set-Top Box Integrated Controller, featuring notably a 252 MHz PowerPC processor subsystem, hardware MPEG2 video and audio decoding and smart card interfaces. The DM 500 features 32 MiB of RAM and an unspecified amount of flash memory, probably 8 MB, given that firmware images are about 5 MiB. It has the standard features of a free-to-air (FTA) satellite receiver, plus extensive Fast Etjernet networking connectivity and a single smart card reader. It does not feature a 7-segment LED display, normally found in other FTA decoders.

Also has the ability to be used on Digital satellite, cable and terrestrial broadcasts (also known as DVB-S, DVB-C, DVB-T).Counterfeit versions of the DM500-S are wide spread and are often sold at a price close to the original. As a result, Dream Multimedia introduced the DM500+, with changes to try to prevent further counterfeiting. The DM500+ model has 96 MiB of RAM instead of 32, and 32 MiB of NAND flash instead of 8 MiB of NOR flash. This makes it similar to the DM600 PVR model. It is only available in DVB-S versions.

There also exist legal clones, built around the same commodity IBM SoC chip and hence having identical or slightly superior features but not sold under the Dreambox brand name (e.g., the Envision 500S, with 48 mebibytes of RAM instead of 32, also available in a 500C cable version, the Eagle box or the Linbox 5558). They have a retail price approaching the one of non-Linux receivers, generally a fraction of the Dreambox 500 price.

In April 2008, Dream Multimedia introduced a time bomb into their latest flash to disable the boot loader on counterfeit models. An unofficial firmware group called Gemini who used the latest flash drivers in their firmware, found that flash corruption would be caused on clone DM500-S receivers. Other developers of unofficial firmware groups would find boxes to be affected by this if they use the latest drivers, providing another time bomb is to be introduced.
So if you want to know more information about digital satellite reciever, you can go on the internet to search it! Also there was a lot of retail on line website on the internet! It’s very convenint to buy it on online: cheap, faster, high quality!
